Babies memorial garden is opened
Opening of the new Babies Memorial Garden by Boston Borough Council and SANDS charity at Boston Crematorium.
GRIEVING parents who have lost a baby will now have a dedicated area to remember their child, after the Babies Memorial Garden was opened at Boston Crematorium.
The site, which was officially opened on Friday, will offer parents and relatives a peaceful haven and a fixed place where they can go to remember their baby.
It was set up after Carolyn Bray, a local representative from SANDS – the stillbirth and neonatal death charity, approached Boston Borough Council about creating a permanent site of remembrance.
Ms Bray, who lives in Kirton, gave birth to a stillborn daughter called Rebecca in 2001.
She said: “It was a very isolating experience. Because she did not draw breath people did not know what to say or do.
“My first contact with Sands meant I was able to speak to others who had been through this. It was the biggest help I could have had.
“We have a grave in the village to go to, but many do not have that focus.”
The wall backing will offer a site for permanent memorial plaques.
The council contributed £15,000 towards the scheme, and SANDS provided the balance for the £18,562 project.
Plans are now underway to raise more money to fund seating, a permanent planting scheme and a central memorial.
