Housing development ‘would put strain on schools’

A potential development on land in Boston could lead to problems for the local school – as it has no space for new pupils, it has been warned.
Cyden Homes’ plans to apply to build 29 new homes off Sir Isaac Newton Drive have led to fears that children living there would have to travel out of the area to go to school, as there is no space at the nearby St Thomas’ Primary School.
The school, which takes two new classes a year, also has no space to expand, as education authority Lincolnshire County Council no longer owns the land around the site.
Coun Alison Austin, who represents the area for Boston Borough Council, said: “As regards to the principle of development, it’s silly that it is not developed, but there has to be the infrastructure.
“There just physically is not the space to extend. If these children go there, they will have to displace others, or go elsewhere.
“They are going to have to extend another school where there is room.”
Coun Austin, who is a member of the council’s planning committee, added: “I have no objection to the principle of housing, but the consequences must be considered.”
Meredith Teasdale, assistant director of children’s services, said: “The number of primary school children a 30-house development would generate is about 5-10 children – although this is a guestimate and could be higher or lower.
“For this type of small development of 30 houses we are confident there is sufficient capacity in the area at this time.
“Parents can go through the independent appeals process if a place is refused at their preferred school.”
