Let’s get the Jubilee party started - £5k set aside by council
A BUDGET of £5,000 has been set to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in Boston town centre but councillors are yet to agree on the details for the royal celebrations.
A meeting of the boroughcouncil’s Boston Town Area Committee, held last Tuesday, discussed plans with a number of ideas suggested by councillors.
There had been some confusion over the Jubilee events in the run up to the meeting..
Coun Derek Richmond said: “I would like to make it clear that me and Yvonne (Coun Gunter) said originally that we would like to make any event held a ‘Right Royal Knees-Up’.”
Chairman Coun Mike Gilbert asked members to agree on three separate issues: whether to hold one event or to support other town centre events; a budget for the event, and to put together a sub-committee which would go away and plan the details - including which day the event would actually take place.
Coun Stephen Woodliffe worked out there is ‘about £7,500 reserves that maybe available,’ therefore a budget or £5,000 was agreed.
A sub-committee was then set up including councillors Yvonne Gunter, Derek Richmond, Mary Wright, Paul Mould and Mark Baker.
Ideas put forward during the meeting included helping residents to make their own entertainment such as barbecues, having a stage with live bands and holding the event in the refurbished Market Place rather than Central Park.
Labour councillors Paul Kenny, Paul Gleeson and Paul Goodale were keen to see the council support residents planning their own events and give advice.
Coun Yvonne Gunter also said this years flowers had been ordered in red, white and blue.

Friday, February 3, 2012 at 08:50 AMYet again this 'cash strapped' council magically produces thousands of pounds to splash out on 'bread and circuses' for the masses....and yet again it seems that this is all done in secret chats between councilors....the names that keep popping up are Mike Gilbert and Paul Kenny....if there is spare cash in the coffers then it should be used on more serious issues....at the moment with this freezing weather it needs to go to support the homeless and elderly not 'Right Royal Knees ups'!!
