Letter: 'Astounded' at headteacher's outburst
I was astounded and outraged at the absolute venom pouring forth from the mouth of the head of a large secondary school.
Before his specialist arts status, Chris Walls once had a 'grammar stream' at Giles School – indeed many a parent I spoke to when my boys were due to take their 11+ was led along by this 'chance' that if a child might not pass their 11+ or indeed if they lived near Giles, he was offering an equivalent education.
This was a clever ruse that he used to increase his pupil numbers and 'steal' academically able pupils from the two grammar schools – on the pretext that he could offer, with his grammar stream, a similar academic education that the grammar school provides and raise his 5 A*-C results.
There is no doubt that his 'ruse' deceived many a parent.
C'mon Mr Walls, tell me what exams do universities use for entrance? The CVA results or
A-levels?
I challenge you to ask any parent or indeed even a teacher to explain what CVAs actually do? Especially when the Key Stage/SATS exams that they are based on have been shown to be useless, marked hopelessly wrong and challenged by almost every school/educator in the country as a total waste of time.
If I were a governor and parent of pupils at the Giles or at the county council, I would call for a review of his position and a reprimand for him and ask him to explain his poor, failing results and concentrate on his own backyard before he knocks successful schools, whichever they might be.
Do these rantings really fit the conduct and profile of a highly paid head?
Mr Walls' petty and ridiculous posturing smacks of the current government's misguided campaign to destroy the grammar school selective education system, not because it is wrong, but simply because it works.
