Letter: Head's comment 'insulting'
As parents of both Giles and Grammar School students we find Mr Walls' comments as reported in last week's Standard under the headline 'Blinkered' as insulting.
As parents of both Giles and Grammar School students we find Mr Walls' comments as reported in last week's Standard under the headline 'Blinkered' as insulting.
Our children are very different regarding their ability and personality and we are lucky in this county that we are able to send our children to schools which suit them.
We have a choice in this area and who is Mr Walls to suggest that Giles adds value to students and the Grammar does not.
We are proud to send our son to Boston Grammar, he has progressed and achieved far more than we could have expected in the two years he has been there and not just academically.
And yes, we do think in this case Grammar School means good, and why shouldn't we? Unlike Mr Walls we do not have a massive chip on our shoulder and we do realise that Giles is a good school in its own right.
We, like other parents, are intelligent enough to see through the government CVA system.
The fact is Giles' pass rate of students achieving five C+ GCSEs is 30 per cent where the Grammar and the High School is 90 per cent, and however the CVA system or Mr Walls likes to dress it up, these are facts.
Long may we have grammar schools where children from different backgrounds are given opportunities to reach their potential.
To abolish grammars just to improve other schools' results would be a disgrace, although this would obviously suit Mr Walls.
Why for once can't we be positive instead of trying to knock anything that is good?
