Belmont TV mast at Stenigot. | WE can all enjoy dramas on the telly thanks to the Belmont TV mast at Stenigot – but who recalls a real life drama at the mast?
It was back in October 1995 when three engineers survived a horror plunge at the famous 1,265 foot tall local landmark. They were travelling inside the transmitter’s lift when it plummeted more than 500 feet to the ground. The men – Jim Burrows, Richard Walton and Mark Spencer – were carrying out routine work on the mast. A fourth engineer, Charlie Doherty, had been stationed at the bottom and raised the alarm.
Miraculously the lift cage did not crush on impact and the men were conscious when emergency services arrived at the scene. They were released and taken to Louth and Lincoln hospitals to be treated for their injuries.

FORMER Withern school football team captain Alistair Stones dropped in this photo of his old team mates. Mr Stones said it was taken in 1957 or 1958 when he was about ten-years-old. He said: “I remember we went to Horncastle and lost seven nil or something like that. But in general, for a small team we did reasonably well. “We didn’t have a proper football pitch. It was just an old field at the back of the school.” Mr Stones is sitting in the middle of the photo holding the ball. He said the boots they are wearing were the boots to have at the time.
