IN reply to the article in last week's paper regarding the Into Town bus service.
Firstly, LCC is in the process of a consultation on the first six months of the service. Or is it? It stated a 'proposal' to make the experimental traffic regulation order a permanent one. One does not do that if minds had not been made up to keep
the service as it is.
What is the point of the consultation?
Is it just another waste of taxpayers' money? Was anyone in town on Wednesday the fourth? Were you approached by anonymous people with clipboards or did you see them? They were the people carrying out the survey for LCC.
I walked around them waiting to be approached, but not one did so I approached them. When I asked the leader about the poor quality of the survey the answer was 'we are doing it on a shoestring'. Just about right for LCC's spending on Boston.
Then we come to the cabinet's view – no comment. Haven't they looked at the service for themselves? What is the view of the spokesman on transport? Have they asked if there is an alternative? Yes there is.
Now let's look at the service.
1. It is well used so there is a need for an Into Town service and more, but is all OK? No.
2. The timetable is appalling. OAPs were waiting for 40 minutes at Fish Hill on those cold February days, and standing. That is not on.
3. What is the cross-town connection like? I have only seen three buses at Bargate bus station once in six months, so that tells you it's not very good.
4. Is there a need for the buses to go through the Bargate precinct? No.
5. The only problem is that it is a one-way system, but it is a 30 minute service at all stops. If a train from Edinburgh to London were 30 minutes late passengers would ask for their money back.
