Blackfriars gets set for relaunch

Tuesday, 9.30am - NEW-look Blackfriars Arts Centre is counting down to its showcase relaunch next week.

Having been rescued from oblivion by an enthusiastic new management, Boston's only theatre is marking its renaissance with a wide-ranging, packed programme of events for the autumn season.

The new Blackfriars era starts on Tuesday, September 2, with Gala Showtime, a night of comedy, music and song starring Bernie Clifton and a full supporting cast.

Following that there's hits from the Blitz in We'll Meet Again, kids' show The Adventures of Pinocchio, psychic Philip Solomon, the FICC gospel singers, Meat Loaf and Cher tribute To Hell and Back, an evening of Gilbert and Sullivan, the thriller Intent to Murder featuring a West End cast, exciting American Superslam wrestling, fast-rising new jazz outfit Empirical and the monthly stand-up comedy club – and that's just September.

October starts with the Dance Krazy showcase and continues with Abba The Show and another top tribute concert, In Dreams.

Boston Playgoers celebrate their 80th anniversary with a ghost story, Vienna Festival Ballet perform Swan Lake, the Glenn Miller Tribute Orchestra swing into town, Opera for a While present Venice to Vienna and Northern Theatre bring their brilliant Tom Lehrer show.

November sees The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, Irish singing star Brendan Shine, Boston Operatic Society's production of Buddy and a mix of songs from the shows in Phantom and the Musicals.

December brings '70s hitmaker Alvin Stardust and his Christmas Show, then a three-week run of the traditional panto Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.
