A YOUNG Boston-area DJ known as ‘Jimmy the Gent’ has just scored a dream gig – at this year’s Leeds Festival.

Jimmy May, from Fishtoft, won the Oxjam DJ competition held in Sheffield, beating off competition from seven others.

The 23-year-old is currently based in Sheffield after graduating last year from university there. Since then he has been working hard to establish himself on the local DJ circuit.

“I threw together a 30 minute party mash-up set mixing hip-hop, dancehall, reggae, metal, grunge, indie, Latin and house,” he said. “I found out at the end of the night that I had the most votes – which was incredible.”

At Leeds Festival, held on August 24-26, Jimmy will play in the Oxfam tent alongside other UK competition winners, keeping the party going until the early hours.

He said: “I’ll be playing an eclectic blend of my favourite music, from funk, soul and disco, to hip-hop, rock, reggae and house. The music scene in Sheffield is broad and I want to represent this diversity through the music I play.”

Jimmy is already well-known around Boston for his DJ-ing and for being a member of Boston rap group 50 Sniffs. He has also DJ-ed at various high-profile dance venues around the country.

His previous DJ-ing success included curating a room at Sheffield’s huge free festival ‘Tramlines’ which brough such acts as Roots Manuva, Ms Dynamite, We Are Scientists, Alt-J, Reverend and the Makers and Beng to the city to play for more than 150,000 people.

“My long-term ambitions are simple really - to play music that people enjoy, but with my own flair and style,” he said. “Thus far it’s led me to fantastic places in less than a year.”

He added: “I also look forward to playing in Boston sometime as I love playing to a home crowd – it’s brilliant.”
