Double delight for jazz lovers
TWO award-winning divas of the jazz world are heading for the South Holland Centre in Spalding.
From this year the centre is taking over the running of Spalding Jazz Club and has started to line up some top-class acts.
First up this spring are Claire Martin and Barb Jungr – who, alongside Mari Wilson, wowed a capacity audience at the theatre in 2006 with their hugely successful Girl Talk.
This year both are bringing their own shows to Spalding, with Claire Martin starting the ball rolling at 8pm on Thursday, January 31.
Claire's stunning voice has won her the Best Vocalist at the British Jazz Awards five times.
She has been hailed as 'the best ever British jazz singer' by Jazz Times, and regularly plays at Ronnie Scott's and other top UK and worldwide jazz venues.
Claire will be accompanied by Jim Mullen on guitar, Laurence Cottle on bass and Chris Dagley on drums, and will be playing songs from her heroine Shirley Horn and close friend Ian Shaw as well as some self-penned material.
After sell-out shows in New York and Australia, Barb Jungr brings her Nina Simone tribute show to Spalding on February 27.
Barb's passionate, funny shows have drawn comparisons with Edith Piaf, Peggy Lee and Simone herself.
Her latest UK tour starts with a three-night run at Ronnie Scott's before taking to the road with her brilliant musicians and a set that includes Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood, Just Like A Woman, I Got Life and more.
Tickets are available from 01775 764777 at 13 (11.70 for Spalding Jazz Club members, 5.50 for students) or you can book both at the same time for 11 per show.
A bottle of wine and antipasti platter for two will also be on sale in the caf bar until 7pm for 15.
For the best news, sport and leisure coverage in the area turn to the Boston Standard, out every Wednesday for just 40p.
