Wednesday, 2:30pm - IT'S not easy being green, but one major Lincolnshire employer is trebling the amount it pays its staff for cycling to work and between meetings.
Lincolnshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust is reaching into its pocket to help reduce the size of its carbon footprint.

Members of staff who used their bike on business were previously paid 6.2p per mile – the standard rate for NHS Trusts – but this has now increased dramatically to 20p per mile.

Mike Simpson, co-ordinator of Spokes – the NHS Cycling Network said: "The Trust is setting a fine example which other NHS Trusts can follow, promoting cycling as a healthy, green, cost-effective means of travel which benefits employees, employers, and the public health of Lincolnshire as a whole."

The Trust – which provides mental health, learning disabilities and substance misuse services across the county – has also introduced new rates for other green ways to and from work.

For car sharing, there has been a fivefold increase from 2p to 10p per mile for every passenger on official business.

And for those who use a lease car, the rate has increased to 13p per mile – the maximum set by HM Revenue and Customs.
