A 65 year-old man from the Boston area was arrested yesterday on suspicion of making a false statement concerning a candidate at the forthcoming elections.

The arrest related to comments about the candidate that were allegedly placed on Facebook.

A Lincolnshire Police spokesman said: “We would remind the public that comments they make on social media in regards to any candidates personal conduct or character could be an offence, under the Representation of the People Act 1983.

“This offence can lead to a person being arrested and receiving an unlimited fine.”

The man has been bailed to return to Boston Police Station at a later date.
