BUDGET: Council to write off business rate debt

BOSSES at Boston Borough Council look set to write off more than £140,000 worth of outstanding business rate debts.

The cash was largely owed by companies which have now gone into administration or have become bankrupt, including £32,695.08 from Sovereign Hotel Ltd.

Accounting errors mean that £13,881.75 owed from Defra is also to be written off.

Business rates are collected by the council and then passed to the Government before being redistributed.

The borough council’s budget also shows that it expects to write off £62,388.67 in council tax debt.
