Motorists were hit by delays as they headed through Boston this morning, as the gates at the level crossing on Sleaford Road was stuck down.
Engineers spent several hours working to fix the problem, which affected rush hour and several hours afterwards.
Network Rail said it had been caused by the extreme cold weather and work was still taking place until very recently.
The company is yet to confirm how long the crossing gates have been down.
