MP Mark Simmonds has visited the British Growers Association to discuss how the agricultural industry can contribute to UK growth.

The Boston and Skegness MP spoke about the need to emphasise the scientific and technological elements of farming which should be very attractive to future job seekers.

He said: “The agricultural industry makes a massive contribution to the UK economy every year, particularly in Lincolnshire where there is a great deal of knowledge and expertise.”

He spoke of the UK’s needs to produce 50 per cent more food in the next 20 years and encouraged the BGA to make submissions to the skills review, currently being run by David Willetts, minister of state at the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills.

The review is aiming to ensure Britain’s future generations have the skills and expertise to meet the demands of a global economy.
