Faster internet on way to the borough
HIGH speed broadband internet is coming to the whole of Lincolnshire in the next five years - and parts of Boston will get it even sooner after being selected for a pilot scheme.
The Government has approved Lincolnshire County Council’s plan to see 90 per cent of properties get superfast internet of at least 24MB per second by 2015, with the rest to get 2MB/second.
By 2017 superfast broadband will be open to the whole county, regardless of location, with £10m of the cash coming from the county council and £57m of public and private sector cash invested in the internet in the next five years.
However parts of Boston and East Lindsey will be benefitting from a better service even sooner with a £300,000 European Regional Development Fund pot to help pay for fibre optic, wireless and satellite schemes.
The details will be announced by the end of March.
Boston Borough Council joint deputy leader and Lincolnshire county councillor Raymond Singleton-McGuire has been lobbying to get better internet speeds.
Coun Singleton-McGuire said: “I am very excited by this news. It is essential for practically everyone and will have knock-on and wide-ranging beneficial effects for the borough.”
He said the investment will help people live here and still work in executive jobs in the City.
He added: “These highly-paid people will be able to work for the City just as effectively from home, here in Lincolnshire and Boston borough, where they will spend more of their money.”
County councillor Kelly Smith, executive member for finance and HR, said: “Our plan will bring superfast broadband to everyone in Lincolnshire. This isn’t a luxury – that’s why the county council is investing £10m in this project, despite the difficult financial climate.
“Improved broadband is vital for business growth, for all residents accessing services, including the growing number of silver surfers, and for young people looking to download learning materials.”

Friday, February 3, 2012 at 07:21 PMIs that true? 24MB! I was always under the asumption that speeds for internet use were measured in Mb. That is to say Mb equals Megabits. MB equals Megabytes. 8 bits to the byte. Are you saying that the speed we can expect almost 200 Mbps, where the present speed, at least for myself, is around 14 Mbps? If this is correct roll it out. I can't wait. You can have a video conference finnished before you even make contact. Cool!
