Move to bring empty homes back in use
SOME of Boston’s 400 empty homes could be returned to use over the next few years as part of a council scheme aimed at providing new homes.
Boston Borough Council plans to secure £217,000 of funding from a New Homes Bonus supplied for the council to provide houses for people in the borough.
It will use the money to fund an empty homes officer, which will be shared with South Holland District Council and make provision to repair homes to get them back into use for rent or as affordable housing.
The idea behind the scheme is that registered housing providers or other agents can repair homes and then return them to use. Rent collected from the homes will then be used to repay a loan borrowed for works at the property.
Money will also be available to owners of empty homes to bring homes to an acceptable state of repair and then offer them as private rented properties.
Homes which are brought back into use by housing providers will be offered to people on the housing register.
