Plan not a waste of time
SLIPPERY Gowt Lane in Boston is set to become a waste hub, after a new waste transfer centre on the road was given the go-ahead.
Lincolnshire County Council’s planning and regulation committee approved proposals for the new facility, on land near to Boston’s tip, at its meeting on Monday morning. Another was also approved in Gainsborough.
The station, which will be similar to one currently operating in Louth and others being built in Grantham and Sleaford, will handle waste primarily from the Boston area, to be taken to the authority’s new Energy from Waste facility which is currently being built near Lincoln.
Work will now begin on the site, which includes a weighbridge, buildings, a car park and an access road, but a number of conditions must be met, including complying with set opening hours.
When the Slippery Gowt Lane site is up and running it is planned that it will be able to handle projected increased levels of waste from now until 2037/38.
Coun Lewis Strange, the county council’s executive member for waste services and green issues, said: “The approval of the planning applications for the waste transfer station marks another significant step towards an entirely new way of dealing with waste produced by Lincolnshire residents.
“Waste that isn’t recycled or composted will be taken to the waste transfer stations by the local district council refuse collection vehicles and loaded onto larger vehicles to be taken to the new Energy from Waste facility in Lincoln, reducing the number of vehicles on the roads. The waste is then turned into something useful at the facility in the form of electricity, rather than sent to costly and environmentally unsound landfill sites, saving taxpayers millions each year.”
A total of five waste transfer sites have now been approved throughout Lincolnshire.
Despite the councillor’s assurance that the number of vehicles on the road will reduce, local people, along with representatives on Wyberton Parish Council, expressed concerns over the increase in traffic.
