A family-run Spar shop in Boston has been crowned the best in the UK.

The bakery and shop in London Road has been in the same family for three generations – and now their dedication and hard work has seen them scoop the ‘Spar Shop of the Year’ award at a ceremony in the Birmingham NEC.

Owner Jacqui Bailey said: “To win this was a complete surprise - we knew we had been nominated but we never thought we would win – we are all over the moon.”

The shop was bought 33 years ago by Jacqui’s dad David Dales who still works there.

Jacqui and her team were nominated among others by Spar’s regional managers. They then underwent a vigorous audit and assessment by an external industry auditor who visited the site and interviewed Jacqui, the staff and some customers to gauge the success of the individual business.

They looked at store’s standards, customer service, attitude, andlooked at the work done to make it successful.

A Spar spokesman said one of the reasons the Boston bakery was that ‘the auditor was very impressed with the way in which Jacqui has personally embraced the shift in technology and the way in which we now need to communicate with our customer base’.

They added: “Her extensive use of social media to promote her store is currently fairly unique and we hope to emulate it across the estate.”

Jacqui added: “We’ve had a year of massive changes at the shop and these awards have been really appreciated by my staff and customers.”

If winning a national award wasn’t impressive enough, the family have also just found out that their Spar shop has received a coveted spot in the IAA Top 100 list for independent retailers in the UK and Ireland.

All entrants are visted by a mystery shopper and judged across 12 core principles of retailing.
