A GRAPHICS whiz from Boston has seen two of his Olympics-inspired images published on the front cover of a London magazine.
Callum Bates, 21, was chosen to design the latest front cover for Leisure Kicks magazine, published on July 9.
Callum’s Photoshop wizardry, which he says is self-taught, was first noticed by the magazine’s publishers in 2010 when he created a striking image of sprinter Usain Bolt.
“I just did it as a practice piece really, and put it online,” said Callum, of Tower Road.
“Then some time later, out of the blue, I got a phone call from the magazine publishers saying they would like to use my image in their 2011 edition. I thought they were just going to use it inside but they made it their front cover.
“To get that call was a big surprise and I had a big smile on my face.”
So impressed were the publishers that they asked Callum back to produce this year’s front page, choosing him over local London designers.
“The image took me six months to complete,” he said. “But it has had praise from the head designer at Team GB, so I’m really pleased.”
Callum has worked as a graphic designer at Chris Cook Print, in Boston, since leaving school aged 16.
London-based Leisure Kicks distributes 325,000 copies of its annual sports publication to universities, schools and colleges across London.
