CLOTHES collections, penny jars and hook-a-duck were all novelty fundraising initiatives employed to raise cash to help prevent malaria.

The Boston branch of Junior Chamber International (JCI) has been busy supporting the Nothing But Nets charity, which, as part of its campaign, distributes free bed nets.

Members are backing National President Allison Cowell, who is also from the town, in her bid to raise $100,000.

Under the guidance of its President Tracy Anderson, the Boston group has taken on a number of fundraising initiatives.

The first saw members recycle phones, donated by Tracy and Allison’s employers Duncan and Toplis, to the tune of £350. This figure was in turn supported by a firm in Holland, bringing the total to £612.50.

Next up was a penny jar initiative with all chambers across the UK trying to collect a mile’s worth of pennies – which equates to £804.67. The Boston jar is now full, raising £30.12. The 141 Boston Air Cadets have also been supporting this scheme.

“The air cadets had done really well. Their penny jar contained £14.96,” said Tracy.

Furthermore, the cadets have been active in a separate scheme collecting 10 bags of clothes. A total of 42 bags were collected by JCI Boston and will be exchanged for cash by a company called Bag 2 The Future.

And finally, before the May Fair rolled into town, members held their own hook-a-duck stall in the Market Place - netting £97.67.

“Our hook-a-ducks were a great success,” said Tracy. “Our customers were aged between one in a pushchair to those aged 80 on mobility scooters.”

Tracy thanked everyone who has supported the fundraising.
