Childhood sweethearts who grew up living next door to each other in East Heckington have celebrated a staggering 70 years of marriage.
Len and Hilly Horn marked their platinum anniversary on August 4 - with family and friends. They married in 1945.
For Len, 93, it was literally a case of falling for the ‘girl next door’ - as the young friends saw their romance blossomed over the years.
During the war, Len was in the Royal Navy - while Hilly, 92, served in the land army.
Daughter Norma Ogden explained: “My dad’s ship, HMS Medway, was torpedoed - he is lucky to be alive now as only 40-50 people were saved.”
Thanks to Len’s lucky escape he was able to go on and make a family with Hilly - having daughter Norma and a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
“None of us would be here if he was killed that day,” she added. Norma said even through recent spouts of ill health, they still work together and support each other.
“Last year my dad went to hospital with an infection. It was the first time he’d ever been,” she said. “He never goes to the doctors or dentists - in fact, during the war, he pulled his own teeth out!”
