Council leaders were quizzed on what plans are in place to commemorate the start of the First World War later this year at a meeting of the full council last night (Tuesday).

Borough Coun Alison Austin raised the point at the meeting where she was told by council leader Peter Bedford that the council had spoken to representatives of local ex service organisations ahead of the anniversary.

She said: “I believe the members of this council, as community leaders, should play a positive role and therefore ask if this administration could consider forming a small cross-party group of elected members to work with communications manager and encourage other appropriate organisations wherever possible.”

Coun Bedford said projects included erecting a memorial sculpture funded by ‘public subscription’ and said it was too early to form a task and finish groups to look at the commemoration further.

This item was filmed, along with the rest of the meeting as part of an experiment by the Boston Standard.
