CONCERNS for alternative disabled parking spaces during the period of the Market Place revamp have been voiced by Boston councillors.
Speaking exclusively to The Standard, Boston Bypass Independents (BBI) Couns Helen Staples and Alison Austin say they are ‘hugely concerned’ about Lincolnshire County Council’s alternative arrangements.
Work begins on the £2 million revamp scheme on July 11, which for eight months will see the market stalls move to Wide Bargate. Some temporary disabled parking spaces have been allocated at Bargate Green and Custom House Quay car park, situated on South Street.
“Alison and I are both hugely concerned for the people with disabilities as we don’t feel these car parks are positioned well enough for people to access the town centre.” said Coun Staples, leader of the BBI.
“However, we think we have the solution after coming up with the idea of using Pump Square car park, situated off Dolphin Lane.”
Currently there are just two disabled parking bays and 22 ordinary spaces in Pump Square. Couns Staples and Austin are suggesting disabled parking could be increased to 80 per cent of the spaces during business hours.
“The contractors’ proposal to use Custom House Quay for disabled parking is alright for those who can walk a reasonable distance or who only need to go to Boots,” said Coun Staples.
“The advantage of Pump Square is it affords easy access to all parts of the Market Place – as well as being convenient for Oldrids and Pescod Square.”
Coun Staples said she will be contacting Boston Disability Forum to guage their views on the idea.
“We think it’s very important that people with disabilities retain their independence where possible and reach all parts of the town centre,” she said.
Concluding, she added: “People who have a greater degree of mobility should be encouraged to park in one of the town’s other car parks or even, for example, at Asda and use the Into Town bus.”
A spokesman for Boston Borough Council said: “Officers working on the Market Place scheme will meet with Couns Staples and Austin to discuss their ideas and the possibility of their implementation.”
