Independent Alan Hardwick has won the police and crime commissioner election for Lincolnshire.

The former Calendar television presenter beat rival David Bowles in the second round of the vote to win the job as the £65,000-a-year public head of the county’s police force.

The ballot has suffered from a poor turnout, with just 15.63 per cent of electors voting.

Speaking after the result Mr Hardwick said: “I will give a voice to the public, especially victims of crime, and work with other services to ensure the safety of the community and effective criminal justice.

He added: “I will not interfere with the operational independence of police officers.”

The result in the second round saw 39,221 votes go to Alan Hardwick and 35,086 to David Bowles, who stood for the Campaign to Stop Politicians Running Policing.

Conservative Richard Davies was third and Labour’s Paul Gleeson last - with the two party candidates dropping out of the race after the first round.

In Boston the turnout was just 14.27 per cent. Out of an electorate of 48,423 only 6,909 people chose to cast a vote for the role.

The Standard understands Mr Bowles narrowly won the vote in Boston itself, with Mr Hardwick in second, Mr Davies third and Mr Gleeson last.

Mr Hardwick told The Standard this week that his number one priority for Boston will be to deal with the issues surrounding immigration and population growth.
