ARSONISTS have attacked and destroyed a community picnic bench in Sibsey – in broad daylight.

Residents around the playing fields in Freiston Road discovered the fire at about noon on Friday after seeing smoke and hearing a crackling sound.

“The bench was quite close to a hedge so the fire could have become much worse,” said Carl Presgrave, from Sibsey Parish Council.

“As a council we want to stamp out this sort of behaviour now before it escalates and show we won’t tolerate it in our village.”

The bench, made from special eco-friendly recycled plastic, will cost the council £500 to replace.

Sibsey Parish Council is currently working with a group of youths to look at the possibility of having a skate park installed at the site.
