A convicted murderer serving a life sentence went on the run from North Sea Camp prison, Lincoln Crown Court was told today.

John McCallum walked out of the Freiston Shore open jail earlier this month and made his way to Boston.

Phil Howes, prosecuting, said that McCallum was arrested by police after he was spotted walking along Spilsby Road in the early hours of the morning.

McCallum admitted he was on the run and told police he escaped because he did not want to be in prison with sex offenders.

The 25-year-old admitted escaping from custody on October 1.

The court was told he was serving a life sentence imposed following his conviction for murder at Teeside Crown Court in March 2006.

He was given a 12-week concurrent jail sentence.
