Police catch sex offender who absconded from open prison

A SEX offender who absconded from North Sea Camp open prison last week has been caught by police and is now in custody.

A helicopter was involved in the search on Thursday night for 46-year-old John Whiteside, who failed to go back to the Freiston Shore prison after being let out on day release.

Whiteside, originally from Leicestershire, is serving a life sentence for sexual offences.

Police today confirmed to The Standard that Mr Whiteside had been found and taken into custody.

A spokesman said: “Officers would like to thank the press and public for their help.”
