STEALING a bottle of aftershave from Oldrids was supposed to help Vita Lazdina raise some cash – instead, it landed her in front of a court last Wednesday.
The 23-year-old had intended to take the £46 bottle of Hugo Boss fragrance to sell, but it ended up costing her more than she had bargained for when magistrates issued her with a hefty fine on Wendesday.
Daniel Paulson, prosecuting, told the bench that security staff saw Lazdina, of Trinity Street, Boston, walk into the store, put the item in her handbag and walk off without paying.
Staff followed her to The Baltic Store on Norfolk Street, but were unable to find the aftershave in her bag. However, the bag was lined with foil so it would not set off the store alarms, he added.
Lazdina told police she put the item in some public toilets with the intention of going back later, but it was gone when she went to pick it up. Unrepresented, she told the court: “I did it and I made a mistake.”
At Boston Magistrates’ Court she was fined £110 and ordered to pay a £15 victim surcharge and £46 compensation to Oldrids.
