IT MAY seem a bit unorthodox to some, but teachers at Kirton Primary School did not bat an eyelid when witches, bears and fairies turned up at the gates recently.

The outlandish characters were there for a special event as part of World Book Week, and as far as the school was concerned, the more imaginative the better.

Even the teachers got in on the action, with several coincidentally dressing up as characters from The Wizard of Oz.

Literacy co-ordinator Jo Cheyne said: “We had quite a mixture of costumes. The children always make an effort and they enjoy themselves.”

The day was used to launch a reading challenge for children at the school.
