The outing on the Boston Belle was organised by Shirley Rogers from the Canal and River Trust’s East Midlands Waterway Partnership.

The trust manages the navigable waterways of England and Wales, with its East Midlands Waterway Partnership helping shape plans, guide decisions about spending, and develop engagement in the region.

Shirley raised funds during the winter to cover the cost of the trip.

The outing tied in with the aims of partnership, and also allowed Shirley to offer a treat to children at the John Fielding Community Special School, a centre to which she has a personal connection, having seen a grandson educated there.

“They do such a wonderful job for the kids,” she said.

In addition to the boat trip, there were a number of other treats for children on the day, including cakes and a baseball cap each.
