A primary school in Boston has announced plans to expand to take on more than 200 extra children to ease a shortage of places in the borough.

The Boston Witham Academies Federation and Lincolnshire County Council are proposing to expand Staniland Academy, in Peck Avenue, Boston, from 420 places to 630 places – including 30 more reception places from September.

In a letter to parents, executive headteacher Adrian Reed said there is expected to be a long term need for more primary school places in the town.

Mr Reed said: “A permanent sustainable solution is needed to accommodate these extra children to avoid overcrowding and/or transporting four year old children to alternative schools outside of their local community.

“Having additional classes and more children on roll at the school will also have financial benefits for the school. This may potentially provide the opportunity to enhance teaching provision and career opportunities for staff which in turn will benefit the learning experience of the children.”

If the consultation is successful, building work to accommodate the extra places will begin during 2013-14 and Mr Reed reassured their would be minimal disruption during term-time.

Lincolnshire County Council’s executive councillor for Children’s Services Patricia Bradwell said the authority would be supporting the proposal should it go ahead.

She said: “There is a demand for additional permanent places in the Boston area and Staniland’s proposals will bring additional classes and more children on roll benefiting both the academy and the community.

“The council has a statutory duty to provide enough school places to meet local demand and the proposal to expand Staniland Academy supports this.”

The news comes a week after we revealed plans for Kirton Primary School to increase its pupil numbers by 210 – the same amount as Staniland.

Consultation on the Staniland expansion plans will end at 5pm, on March 15, and there will be a public meeting in the Main Hall of the school at 5pm on Monday.

Consultation sessions will run on Monday between 8.30am and 4.30pm.
