School’s top of the class for progress

‘OUTSTANDING’ is just one of the positive terms used by inspectors to describe the progress made at an under-achieving primary school in Boston.

‘Good’ and ‘exemplary’ are two more of the words Ofsted officials put to the improvements made at St Thomas’ CE Primary School since it was placed into Special Measures last March, following an inspection which showed the school to have a number of issues.

Particularly good results were shown for pupils’ achievements, the quality of teaching and the quality of leadership after the site was visited on January 24 and 25.

The Wyberton Low Road school was placed in Special Measures last year after it failed to make improvements following an inadequate inspection result. Ofsted found issues with the level of attainment, early years provision and management at the site.

But following this visit – the second of six possible trips the body could make to the school – inspectors found that ‘very rapid progress’ had been made. They described pupils’ progress as ‘outstanding’, and said ‘the learning environment was exemplary’.

Inspector David Martin said in the report: “The school has already met almost all of the demanding targets set through the post-inspection action plan.”

Executive head teacher Helen Richardson told The Standard: “I am delighted with the report and delighted that HMI has recognised the progress that has been made at the school.

“Staff have worked very hard and what we now have is a school that is giving our children a good standard of education and a good experience, which was not the case. We are going to continue to develop the school.”
