A PARISH council chairman has planted an elm tree to mark a year in office.

Coun Pat Cooper, chairman of Wyberton parish Council, marked her year 2011/12 with the elm.

She was helped by the parish Clerk Karen Allen. It has been planted in the new part of the Sir Joseph Country Park off West End Road in Wyberton and is part of the Big Boston Woods project.

The vice-chaiman of Boston Woods Trust Richard Austin said he thought the tree was the first Dutch-elm disease-resistant elm from this stock planted in the borough.

He said: “Before 1960 there were many fine elm trees in the borough that were killed by this disease.

“Wyberton Parish Council hopes that future generations can again enjoy the grace of these spectacular trees.”
