‘Special barge’ will carry out river bed investigations for flood proposals

THE Environment Agency is set to use a special barge to carry out investigations beneath the bed of the River Haven as part of on-going work towards the town’s proposed flood barrier.

The organisation will use information gained during the survey to learn about the river’s geology and ground conditions, which can be used to help engineers design the Boston barrier and make improvements to the Haven flood defence.

Mike Dugher, area coastal manager at the Environment Agency, said: “The works are a vital step towards the proposed Boston Barrier. They will ensure the final design of the scheme is as effective as it can be in helping to prevent flooding and improving the river for navigation.”

Work will be taking place around the clock to drill a total of 16 holes at locations between Black Sluice Lock and a point at the Port of Boston, but an echo barrier will be in place to keep noise disruption to a minimum.

The project is scheduled to begin on Monday and continue until February 24. Further ground work will take place later in the year.
