This photograph of the area around what is now the New England Hotel (centre of picture) was brought to our attention by a reader after it was posted on a Facebook history page.

The reader believes it was taken in the 1930s and said the buildings in the middle were demolished in the 1950s.

The area is now the Bargate Green car park and where the buses are parked is roughly where the Bargate roundabout (end of what is now John Adams Way) is in the present day.

The picture is from the English Heritage’s Britain from Above, a four-year Heritage Lottery funded project to make available online the first 95,000 images of a collection of aerial photography, taken between 1919-53.

The collection includes more than 1.2 million photographs taken by Aerofilms Ltd between 1919-2006. English Heritage works with the Royal Commissions on the Ancient and Historic Monuments of Wales and Scotland.
