Golden couple used party to help charity

FIFTY years of marriage has brought its fair share of ups and downs for Brian and Janet Palmer, as it would for most couples.

With Janet having overcome breast cancer and Brian having suffered from heart problems, they have had to pull together to support each other a lot over the years.

But as the pair, of Woodville Road, marked their golden wedding anniversary earlier this month it all slipped away, as they celebrated the occasion with a party to raise money for charity.

They raised £470 for charities supporting Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease, which they chose because they had family who suffered from the conditions, in a country music event at Wyberton Parish Hall.

The celebration, which was attended by around 130 people, was extra special for the couple, as it also marked Janet’s 71st birthday on the day of their anniversary.

They actually married on her 21st birthday, after going for their first date to celebrate her 18th three years earlier.

Janet said: “I asked Brian where he was going to take me for my birthday. We went to the Regal Cinema to see the Dambusters. After that it carried on. Three years later we were married.”

The couple, who are both retired, have two children, six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. They run a monthly country music club at Sibsey Village Hall.
