The trust behind Boston’s Pilgrim Hospital has come under scrutiny for its high death rates in the wake of the Stafford scandal.

United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust (ULHT) is one of 14 hospitals now being investigated by NHS medical director Sir Bruce Keogh because they have higher-than-expected death rates.

It comes following revalations made during a public inquiry into deaths at Mid-Staffordshire Hospitals NHS Trust published last week.

The trust, which runs eight sites in Lincolnshire, has had a higher than average figure for its Hospital Standardised Mortality Ratio (HSMR) and the Summary Hospital-level Mortality Indicator (SHMI) for two years.

Sir Bruce said: “The purpose of my investigation is to assure patients, pulic and Parliament that these hospitals understand why they have a high mortality and have all the support they need to improve.”

A spokesman for ULHT said the trust ‘welcomed’ the opportunity to demonstrate improvements at its sites, which have meant it is no longer an ‘outlier’ in another key measure.

He added: “Our mortality figures have improved in the last year. There is still more work to do, and we are focussing on key improvements to bring mortality ratios down further, including the introduction of ‘a plan for every patient’, daily ward rounds by senior doctors and implementing care bundles.”
