Health support group set to mark tenth anniversary
A Boston-based support group for people with bowel and eurology complaints is gearing up to celebrate its tenth anniversary.
The East Coast Ostomy Support Group started as an informal meeting of five people, including the stoma nursing team at Pilgrim Hospital, in 2003 and now has more than 80 members.
The group provides support and friendship for patients and their families before and after surgery and treatment.
Albert Shield, member at the inaugral meeting at Burton House, said: “I was very honoured when ‘Friends’ was formed to be asked to be their chairman. I have seen the group grow in numbers and witnessed the many friendships formed.
“Our meetings, which are now held at Rochford Tower Hall on the last Tuesday each month between 2pm and 4pm, provide an opportunity for friends to meet and discuss problems and worries in a relaxed and formal atmosphere.
“In addition to our regular meetings when we have guest speakers on a variety of subjects and visits by representatives from stoma manufacturing companies, we also arrange social outings and events, together with our latest venture, a luncheon club where ‘Friends’ meet at a local pub or restaurant to enjoy a meal and a chat.
“Our members come from quite a wide area and as our numbers have grown those from the Skegness area have formed their own group. We also have quite a few from the Spalding area, and of course, we are always ready to welcome new members.
“On behalf of all of our members I must say a very big thank you to our Stoma nursing team for the wonderful support they continue to give”.
Meetings are on the last Tuesday of the month at Rochford Tower Hall, from 2pm-4pm. For more information contact Mr Shield on 01775 762246 or secretary Betty Williams on 01205 724120.
