Pilgrim Hospital bosses overturn ticket handed to mum who rushed baby to A&E

Hospital chiefs have overturned a parking ticket given to a woman who rushed her baby son to A&E - after The Standard stepped in to help.

Wioletta Komar, of Tannery Close, Boston, drove her 10-week-old baby Daniel to Pilgrim Hospital - but upon arrival found there were no available car park spaces.

“I was home that day and my son was crying for six hours non-stop,” said Ms Komar. “I was really worried.

“I tried to get into the outpatients car park but it was packed, cars were queueing outside so I went round to the main car park, but the cars were going round, unable to find any parking.

“I was on my own and had 10-week-old crying and screaming in back of the car so I parked the vehicle in a safe place at the back of the car park. I didn’t know what else to do at the time. It was on a yellow line but it wasn’t causing an obstruction.”

Mrs Komar said she told the A&E reception how she had to park and staff told her she had no option but leave it there, before advising she contact the parking enforcement company if she gets a ticket.

The mother and baby were in A&E for two hours, but upon returning to the car saw there was a parking charge notice issued by Total Parking Solutions - who enforce the car parking on behalf of the Pilgrim.

She wrote to the company to appeal the fine - but got a response to say it had been rejected.

She added: “My son is much better now, I didn’t know what was wrong with him at the time but the doctor thinks he was suffering from bad colic.”

A spokesman for United Lincolnshire Hospitals Trust (ULHT) which runs Pilgrim Hospital, said: “We felt it was absolutely right for us to intervene in this case. Total Parking Solutions were just doing their job correctly - but in this case we have asked them to reinburse her for the fine.”

“We acknowledge the problem with parking at the hospital and are actively seeking solutions to improve this. We apologise for any inconvenience experienced at particularly busy times.

“Car parking across the trust is managed by an external company, Total Parking Solutions (TPS) Ltd who work closely with our facilities team to ensure drivers comply with parking regulations at the hospital and park in a safe and responsible manner. The car parking attendants do not know the individual circumstances of each patient, however we do review parking appeals that are escalated to us and on this occasion we have cancelled this parking charge.”
