Pilgrim Hospital has come under the spotlight again, after it was raised nationally that it was said to be operating with ‘dangerously low levels of staff’.

The Sibsey Road site is one of 17 hospitals in England which has been issued with a warning following inspections by the CQC showing there were not enough staff to keep patients safe, national press revealed this weekend.

However, ULHT, which runs Pilgrim, said the figures were more than a year old, and changes had now been made.

A spokesman said: “We are committed to providing high quality care for our patients and over the last year we have successfully recruited to a large number of clinical posts for both nursing and medical staff. We are in the process of introducing a new staffing template to be used on every ward.”

There are currently 2,066 full-time equivalent filled posts at the hospital and 16 new posts have been created since last year. More than 40 other members of new staff have been recruited and are waiting to start their jobs at the hospital.

The CQC launched an investigation into the standard of care at Pilgrim in summer 2011, after raising major concerns over the standard of care at the hospital. Levels of staffing was one of the issues which was raised at the time and in several checks since. A spokesman for the organisation the most recent check took place in December.

She added: “Pilgrim Hospital has been subject to the ongoing monitoring of its compliance with the national standards of quality and safety, as with all services registered with the Care Quality Commission. CQC carried out an unannounced inspection in early December of 2012 to check on progress with improvements highlighted at the time of our earlier inspection and we now await the publication of this report.”
