Wheels in motion for new X-ray machine in support of hospital staff who are battling cancer
Accident and Emergency and ambulance Staff at Pilgrim Hospital do a 24-hour bikeathon for charity.
Staff from Pilgrim Hospital’s accident and emergency department got on their bikes to support two colleagues who are battling cancer.
Workers from the department along with paramedic staff decided to do a 24-hour bikeathon in the reception area of the hospital, and managed to raise £1,400.
The event was organised by Suzy Garner, Helen Johnson, Simon Horniblow, Anne Dobbs and Liz Cannon andthe money raised will go towards a new Faxitron X-ray machine.
Staff nurse Simon Horniblow said: “The staff wanted to do something for local people and wanted to show that the accident and emergency department do care.
“We don’t always have time and this is our way of showing our commitment to work colleagues and local people.”
The new machine will allow patients to be X-rayed while they’re in theatre, meaning results can be checked on the spot.
Other donations came from Sparkle Dust, which gave £1,300, and Simon Taylor who gave 10 per cent of his business takings on the day.
Receptionist Liz Cannon said that a high number of staff took part over the course of the 24 hours, with people doing their bit for the cause before and after their shifts.
There were three bikes being ridden almost the whole time.
She said: “It was worth it. People were so generous and we ended up with about 60 raffle prizes. It brought the department together.”
The staff battling cancer are receptionist Denise Butler and health care assistant Maria Slater.
Denise has been at Pilgrim Hospital for a number of years working first as a supervisor before leaving then coming back as a receptionist.
She has breast cancer and has had the illness twice in four years.
Maria has stage two breast cancer and has written a blog about her experiences.
