Nursing students withdrawn from Pilgrim Hospital
STUDENTS nurses carrying out their training at Pilgrim Hospital have been withdrawn from the facility, after the Nursing and Midwifery Council expressed serious concerns over the suitability of the site.
Around 100 students from the University of Nottingham, the University of Lincoln and the Open University lfet the hospital yesterday afternoon, after the universities were told to immediately withdraw their learners.
Prof Patrick Callaghan, Director of Research in the School of Nursing, Midwifery and Physiotherapy, said: “Yesterday I took an urgent call from the Nursing and Midwifery Council requesting the urgent withdrawal of students on the basis of serious concerns which had been raised by the Care Quality Commission,
“Our primary concern is for the quality of the students’ learning and welfare and concerns were raised so that is why we took the action we have to safeguard the quality of learning.”
A spokesman for the Nursing and Midwifery Council said: “Following serious concerns that have formally been raised with the NMC we have asked The University of Lincoln, The University of Nottingham and The Open University to withdraw around 100 nursing and midwifery students with immediate effect.
“We are working with the universities to review the suitability of the learning environment at Pilgrim Hospital and to support all students affected at this time.”
Some students have been reallocated to different centres nearby as a result of the withdrawal and others have been given authorised leave until alternative clinical placements can be organised.
Neither Prof Callaghan or the NMC said they would comment on whether or not students would return to Pilgrim in the near future.
