Then health minister Andrew Lansley told The Standard that the Pilgrim Hospital’s maternity unit was ‘a bit shabby’ when he visited last year.
Mr Lansley, who has now been replaced by Jeremy Hunt, visited on April 26 .
Speaking exclusively to this paper on that day, he said: “Mark wanted me to see the maternity ward to see some of the problems and high quality services.
“Of course there were also positive things including the new intensive care ward. It’s important to turn things around. Mark’s job and my job is to support the NHS and to improve it.”
Mr Lansley did not respond to requests for a comment on his support for funding for the hospital.
