Ward death investigation launched

AN INVESTIGATION is being carried out on a Pilgrim Hospital ward following the death of a patient.

Lincolnshire Police and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) are carrying out the investigation after a 53-year-old Spalding man, John Biggadike, died following a fall at the hospital.

It is believed he was due to undergo physiotherapy treatment at the time of the incident.

A HSE spokesman said: “The HSE is aware and we are investigating.”

A Lincolnshire Police spokesman confirmed that at approximately 1.15pm on Tuesday, April 10, they were notified by the coroner’s officer of Mr Biggadike’s death.

They said: “A joint investigation is currently being undertaken by Lincolnshire Police and the HSE and an inquest has been opened and adjourned.”

A spokesman for United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust confirmed the incident had taken place on ward 8A.

She said: “We immediately reported the incident to the Health and Safety Executive and the coroner, who has requested a police investigation.

“Until the outcome of any investigation we cannot comment any further.”

It is possible the HSE’s investigation could take up to two years to complete.
