Centenary celebrations for guides

As some of your readers may be aware, September 2009 will see the launch of Girlguiding UK's Centenary celebrations through a number of 'parties' taking place across the UK.

Over the next 14 months guiding members from right across the country will be celebrating this unique event alongside members of the Trefoil Guild.

This 'spirit of guiding' is exactly what the Trefoil Guild - an organisation of over 20,000 members which include women and who have been or are still connected with guiding - is all about. And it's this spirit, whether it's through giving girls and young women a voice, or providing the unique girl-only space where girls grow in self-confidence and have fun, which the Trefoil Guild is championing 100 years on as a part of the family of guiding.

There are hundreds of events taking place right across the UK over the coming months, including a launch party on September 5th and exhibitions at the cinema in October and the Stump in November.

The great thing about Girlguiding UK - the largest organisation for girls and young women in the UK - is that it is as relevant today as it was when it first started 100 years ago.

It has always led by the ambitions and needs of the girls of the day. Today, for example girls oversee community projects overseas while in 1912 - just four years after the first powered flight in Britain - unbelievably there was an air mechanics badge.

So, on behalf of the Trefoil Guild, I would like to extend my warmest congratulations to Girlguiding UK and its 100 years of putting girls in the lead.
