Letter: Heath check screening - 30/06/10

PROBABLY in company with many people in Boston, on Saturday I received a junk mail approach from a private company inviting me to have a 10-minute stroke screening 'for only £45'.

I agree with them entirely that early identification of potential stroke victims can and does lead to a dramatic reduction in the numbers of strokes, which can be devastating. Initial screening is available free on the NHS, but of course many potential stroke victims do not consider that they are at risk and so are never tested.

To help combat this, Rotary clubs across the country set up stroke screening centres in major shopping areas on one Saturday in April each year. Members of the public are free to drop in without appointment and be tested. They are referred to their GPs if there is a potential problem – there is no charge made.

In April 2010, the two Boston Rotary clubs set up their Stroke Awareness Tent in Pescod Square. Our doctors and nurses saw 189 members of the public that day; of these 29 were referred to their GPs for treatment.

The Spalding Rotary clubs host a similar event at Springfields each year.

Please let your readers know that they can feel free to visit us next year.
