I commented last week on the fact that the letters page gives councillors a good idea of what is really happening in the town. So it came as a bit of a surprise to read letters from two (Independent) councillors who should be praised for their forthright views.

Coun Carol Taylor makes similar comments as me regarding the reason some people sit on the council, and more importantly points out that a number of borough councillors are also county councillors, so get a double allowance.

It seems to be a case of take two lots but don’t do the work for one!

The county reps certainly don’t appear to be pushing the case – or any case – for Boston.

Coun Richard Leggott also makes the point that council members can also forgo any part of their allowances, if they wish. The pigs are due to fly over the Market Place any time soon!

Speaking of the Market Place . . . little seems to have changed since the much-heralded story about maps being put up at the side of the ticket machines to advise motorists where it was legal to park.

I don’t know if these maps were produced to make a good story for the papers, but they seem to have disappeared. That is, unless someone has taken them for souvenirs.

In any event, on Friday morning last week it appeared things were – almost – back to normal, with many cars parked where they should not be. And no sign of any enforcement officer.

l am not sure how much the Christmas lights cost this year. If it was into the thousands, perhaps we should save the money and not bother.

I don’t think I’m the only one who is underwhelmed, and I’m sure the money could be better spent elsewhere.

And were there really ‘thousands’ at the opening, as claimed on the council website?
