£165k roof repairs begin at church

Scaffolding has gone up inside St Peter and St Paul’s Church, in preparation to repair the roof and save the church for future generations.
Builders have moved all the pews to the side in order to start the work which will cost £165,000 and will waterproof the building, meaning the structure will need less if any work for a long time to come.
Father Gary Morgan (pictured) said: “This means that for generations of worshippers to come, they have got a watertight building, and if we haven’t got that we haven’t got anything.
“The church should be the centre of the community and be there for everybody and this will enable us to do that.”
The roof damage was caused by natural wear and tear over time.
A total of £10,000 was raised towards the cost of repairing the church by parishioners and people in the village through events including the ‘reverse alchemy’ project, which aimed to turn metal into money, as well as bingos and donations through services.
“We’ve had art exhibitions and concerts and things that aren’t necessarily religious themed,” added Mr Morgan.
The congregation will continue to attend services in the chancel of the church during the work, which is expected to take four to six weeks.
