An ‘adventurous’ four month old puppy had to be rescued by firemen after he got his head stuck in a gate when following his cat ‘best friend’.

Barney the labrador was freed by a fire crew at the family home on Milne Green, in Swineshead, just after 6.30pm last Tuesday.

Father-of-two Ted Benton said his partner had called him to say the dog had got stuck.

He said: “He was outside in the garden where we’ve got a gate closing him in. He was trying to be adventurous and get out and got his head stuck in one of the circles.

“We’ve got a cat [Billy] as well and they’re near enough best friends. He saw the cat get out and thought he could as well.”

Mr Benton said he waited with the dog while emergency services were on their way because he was ‘struggling to get out and shaking’.

He added: “There was nothing we could do, we thought he was going to die he was shaking that much.

“He got out and was right as rain and wouldn’t leave the fire crew alone.”

Mr Benton and his partner Rebecca Avison, got the pet not long ago as he wanted a family dog.

The pair have two children Jayden Benton, two, and Riley Benton, four months.

The family thanked the fire crews for helping their puppy.
